HOW TO COPE WITH JOB LOSS
Lost your job? Six steps to help you cope and successfuly re-enter the job market.
NEW YORK, NY - Uncertain economic times can cause frustration, uncertainty and depression, especially if you have lost your job.
If you are in this situation, the suggestions below can help you cope.
1) Do not take the job loss personally. Unfortunately, chances are that we will all at some point in time, lose a job. This is a good time to reassess career goals, take a breather (if finances allow), and/or catch up with family and friends.
2) Take time (a few days, a few weeks) to let the reality of what has happened sink in. You will likely experience a range of emotions: depression, anger, frustration. Realize that these are normal. However, dont allow a negative state of mind to take permanent hold.
3) Take steps to re-enter the job market: polish your resume, update your skills, start networking. It is important to do this only after you have allowed time to deal with your emotions.
4) Maintain a positive attitude. This does not mean having a smile on your face at all times. What it does mean is to have a sense of perspective about what has happened. Life is cyclical; there are ups and downs in almost every facet. Adopt the attitude of "this too shall pass."
5) Realize that everything happens for a reason. Although it may seem like the worst thing that could possibly happen at the time, it could turn out to be the best thing. Life is what YOU make of it. How you handle adversity speaks volumes about your character.
Yuwanda Black, owner of Small-Business-Support-Services.com, recounts, "The slow economy has been a good thing for me. As my segment of the market cooled, I had more time to reassess the goals of my company. That's when I researched and added a whole new division to my existing firm, Inkwell Editorial."
The new division Ms. Black refers to offers back office support to small businesses in the form of payroll processing, bookkeeping, word processing, Web development, etc.
6) Finally, take good care of yourself. Continue to exercise (or start if you do not), eat right, meditate. These are vital to good health. It is critical that you nourish your mind and body with good, healthy, positive food and thoughts.
These steps will help keep you mentally and physically prepared to be "on the go" again before you know it.
