DOCTOR ISSUED PATENT ON BIOMARKER LINKING AUTISM, ADD AND ADHD

Dr. Joan Fallon announced today that The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued to her patent # 6,534,063 entitled Methods of Treatment of Pervasive Developmental Disorders .The invention is a biomarker that links ADD, ADHD and autism biologically where previously only behavioral symptoms were considered a link. The biomarker chymotrypsin, a digestive enzyme, can signal the lack of protein digestion similar to that found in cystic fibrosis.

YONKERS, N.Y. March 18, 2003 Dr. Joan Fallon announced today that The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued to her patent # 6,534,063 entitled Methods of Treatment of Pervasive Developmental Disorders . The patent, which will remain in force until 2019, covers the use of a specific biomarker as the basis for the administration of secretin to children with pervasive developmental disorders including autism, ADD and ADHD.

The biomarker links ADD, ADHD and autism biologically where previously only behavioral symptoms were considered a link. The biomarker chymotrypsin, a digestive enzyme, can signal the lack of protein digestion similar to that found in cystic fibrosis. This finding opens the door to a host of potential biological treatments for children with autism ADD, ADHD and other PDD spectrum conditions.

Chymotrypsin is an enzyme secreted by the pancreas in response to the presence of protein in the upper gastrointestinal tract. . Without proper protein digestion, the formation of amino acids, which are the building blocks for new proteins is impaired. New proteins can not be synthesized by the body, and this can lead to disability and or disease in children. The biomarker can ultimately help determine who has, and who might develop a pervasive developmental disorder. As proposed by Dr. Fallon a simple stool test is all that is needed to determine if there is a lack of protein digestion.

"This patent recognizes a unique deficiency in children with autism, ADD and ADHD". Says Dr. Fallon, inventor and patent holder. The use of secretin for children with these conditions can be refined through the use of this biomarker" states Dr. Fallon. "I intend to further examine the potential multifold biological causes of autism, ADD and ADHD, through the use of biological markers. I am currently investigating biomarkers for these and other conditions and have multiple patents pending. This begins the process of isolating and examining biological processes in these children, which may ultimately lead to prevention or a cure." states Dr. Fallon
