Every crime has two victims, the person who has had a crime committed against them and the person unwittingly duped into buying stolen goods.
Most people are unaware that legally if an item they have purchased proves to be stolen then at the very least they will lose the goods without any chance of compensation and at worst they could be prossecuted for receiving stolen goods.
Have you ever had anything stolen from you?
Its Missing.com launched today.
In 2001-2002 an estimated 13 million crimes were commited against adults living in private households in the UK, of which 5,527,082 were recorded by the police. This shows a worrying 7% increase on the previouse year (source- http://www.crimereduction.gov.uk/statistics23.pdf)
Add to this the increasing loss of public confidence that the missing property will be recovered and it is obvious that something needs to be done to help people recover their missing items.
Victims of crime often feel completely helpless and totally reliant on the aurthorities to recover their stolen or missing items. http://www.itsmissing.com has been created to help redress the balance. They aim to give the public a powerful tool to help them recover their own missing items.
CEO and founder of Itsmissing.com Claire Collier said recently: -
"Crime is a blight on our way of life. Every crime has two victims, the person who has had a crime committed against them and the person unwittingly duped into buying stolen goods. By providing a way for victims to reach a wide audience cheaply and efficiently we hope to make life very difficult for criminals."
She went on to say: -
"Itsmissing.com is not only aimed at individuals. If private indivinduals, companies and insurance companies all post items to the Its Missing database and second hand shops, pawn brokers, internet auction sites and private individuals take the time to check the status of things offered. Very quickly Its Missing.com will become a crime busting force to be reconned with. Most criminals are oportunists and if they are made to feel the market for their stolen goods has become difficult with a high chance of them being identified then hopefully they will think twice before commiting a crime. If they cant sell it then theres no point in stealing it."
Estimates on the number of stolen goods being sold over the Internet are currently unavailable but with the wide availability of intenet auction sites and the anonimity they provide these obvious outlets wont have gone unoticed by criminals. Most people are unaware that legally if an item they have purchased proves to be stolen then at the very least they will lose the goods without any chance of compensation and at worst they could be prossecuted for receiving stolen goods.
By searching itsmissing.com not only does a purchaser obtain some piece of mind that the item they have been offered has not been reported to itsmissing.com, they can also show they made some effort to verify the goods were not stolen. This could prove usefull if ever they were accused of receiving stolen goods.
