Reach For The Stars
Saturday Night Live is a late-night sketch-comedy television program that has been running on NBC in what appeared to be an unpromising time slot - 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays, to an East Coast audience. To the surprise of almost everybody, the show became a hit after it premiered on October 11, 1975 and SNL represented the boldest leap in television comedy.
SNL became the highest rated late-night show in America when it surpassed "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" in 1977. Broadcast three Saturdays a month, the main elements of the show remain the same: a celebrity host, musical guest, sketches, commercial parodies, and a fake news segment.
SNL's ensemble cast has seen many faces come and go as the seasons have changed. Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Billy Crystal, Robert Downey Jr., Mike Myers, Ben Stiller and Chris Rock are just some of the cast that have gone on to become household names.
Rock and Roll music has been a central part of Saturday Night Live from its inception. Each week a musical guest has performed live and the roster of acts have been impressive. The show has also had its own band.
Some of the comedy presented on the show has been critized as being in poor taste, but that criticism can be made of almost any variety series in television history.
