LOCAL DETROIT POETS FEATURED ON MARCH 28TH IN HONOR OF
POETS AGAINST THE WAR MOVEMENT
A group of Detroit poets will be holding a poetry reading on Friday, March 28 ,2003 at Camillian Café, 300 Monroe, Detroit, MI (Greektown), at 7:00 PM sponsored by Redd Films, as part of the Poets Against The War movement. This international, grass-roots event features readings in more than one hundred cities and towns across the United States, as well as in nations around the world.
As part of Poets Against The War, a group of poets, led by Sam Hamill of Poets Against The War, will present U.S. Congressional Representative Marcie Kaptur (Dem, OH) and other members of Congress with a copy of the more than 10,000 anti-war poems that have been submitted in the past month to the Poets Against The War website (http://poetsagainstthewar.org). According to Hamill, This is the largest poetry anthology ever created on a single topic. It will take more than two cases of paper to print a single copy of the anthology."
Detroit is joining countless other cities in holding readings featuring peace and anti-war poems on Friday, March 28, 2003, including Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle; London and Oxford, Geneva, Tokyo, and Berlin; and venues in Italy, India, and Australia. Poets Against the War came into being after First Lady Laura Bush planned to host a celebration of American poetry at the White House on February 12. This "Poetry and the American Voice" symposium was canceled after several prominent poets declined her invitation in protest against the U.S. push toward war in Iraq.
The Detroit reading will include acclaimed national and local artists: Liberty R.O Daniels, Aurora Harris, Talitha J. of the Black Ink Collective, Knowledge Born Truth Allah, Third Eye Open Poetry Collective, and Pitch Black Poets.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Admission is FREE.
