MABEK INC. LAUNCHES ETHNIKOS COLLECTION TOY LINE

WASHINGTON, D.C. .- Ethnikos", the African folk-art inspired toy line,made a debut at the 100th American International Toy Fair in New York, February 16 -- 19, 2003.

The Ethnikos Collection (name derived from the word ethnic) was conceptualized with the aim of establishing a connection amongst peoples of the world through specialized themes, characters, and materials.

Ethnikos expressions of love, peace and world harmony are demonstrated by the use of traditional West African fabrics, which are used for special occasions, as gifts to loved ones, and most significantly as gifts of reconciliation. Each Ethnikos toy you bring home delivers a message of good tidings year round," states designer Miss Ajuma Ataguba, who is of West African origin. Ive been sewing and knitting my own doll clothes since age seven, in a self-taught method inspired by my mother and my grandfather."

The first Ethnikos dolls were handmade by Miss Ataguba in 1994, and were an instant hit in Nigeria. Local retailers and trade show attendants encouraged Mabek Inc. to expand their distribution into the United States, where retailers are always looking for products that provide positive social messages.

Ethnikos toys utilize yarn hair, soft-sculpture bodies, and custom printed fabrics in West African colors and motifs. Dolls in 3 sizes include Rassy Dollieko", a long-haired, dark complexioned girl, wears a multi-colored dress signifying harmony; press her tummy and she sings. Her friend Jummy Dollieko" has similar features and wears sunglasses and a blue Adire print" dress, which represents joy.She also sings if you press her tummy gently (SRP $5, $15, and $20 for mini, medium, and large)

Animals include the white Doggieko Kente Dog" (4" and 7"), whose cap and collar utilize the African kente cloth and signifies calm. (SRP $4.50 and $10). The 3-piece Giraffeko Family set includes a large, medium, and small giraffe in dark brown soft fabric, with a special black and white printed muzzle, ears and hooves that symbolize peace. (SRP $50) Froggieko Froggie" with guitar stands on two hind legs and wears a scarf bearing the traditional West African kente -- he plays an American country music song as part of his Merrymaking" message. (SRP $12). Ellieko Elephant" (3" and 7") uses bright red fabric symbolizing love, and ears in a blue print representing unity; press Elliekos trunk to hear I Love You". (SRP $4.50 and $10). And, Octiko Octopus" (5" and 9") is available in yellow or red, with multi-print fabric legs and hats, which signify truce and friendship. (SRP $4.50 and $9).

Humpty Dumpty (4" and 8") is bright red with a blue printed outfit including a beret and a printed nose - his unique look is designed to say Dont Give Up". (SRP $5 and $12) And the gorgeous Sunnyko Sunflower, symbolizing happiness (4" and 12") is in yellow and red with multi-colored rays and loops at the top for hanging. Press to hear I Love You.
