Special Concert Event Celebrates Legacy of Cesar E. Chavez
March 28 Salsa/Jazz/Latin band "Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band" headline Cesar E. Chavez celebration at Modesto's State Theater; music, culture and the legacy of Chavez to be celebrated
MODESTO, CA -- This Friday evening, March 28, 2003, a special event is planned to honor the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, one of the most important civil and human rights leaders in U.S. history. Of particular interest to the Hispanic communities throughout Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and other Central Valley cities, the "Cesar E. Chavez Day of Service and Observation," signed into California State legislation by Governor Davis, is an important time to celebrate community, successes and future.
In Modesto, Professor Jose Cuellar, chair of La Raza studies at USCF and leader of Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band will take the stage at a very special concert event honoring Cesar E. Chavez. A noted educator with a strong national background in human rights and Hispanic issues, Cuellar's band has established a unique position in contemporary Latin music. Moreover, as a renowned scholar focused on Hispanic issues (he holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology) Cuellar's message is one of pride, Latino heritage, and American solidarity.
Here's what the critics are saying about Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band:
- "An intoxicating mix of party music and politics..." (The San Francisco Weekly, 1992)
- "A transcultural reproduction of border music... that draws inspiration from Chicano pride... a festive mixture of rhythms that break cultural barriers" (Cambio, 1992)
- "from straight salsa to rhythm and blues to a hybrid of the two... from the long elegant notes of Mexican folk melodies to the strong, forceful horns of Junior Walker and James Brown, taking the audience on an aural exploration of the bridges between Chicano and African American culture." (The San Francisco Bay Guardian, 1991)
- "Tex-Mex, classic rock, blues and salsa, enhanced by a crack crew of musicians (including an amazing brass section) and a lively stage show..." (BAM Magazine, 1990)
According to the event producer, Armando Flores, "This concert event is much more than your typical concert fare. Professor Cuellar is a well-rounded and widely respected educator who has lived the Latin experience we all relate to. Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band weaves aspects of culture and history -- important pieces of the Hispanic experience -- into the show."
