Self-Esteem Issues at the Core of Saddam Hussein's and Kim Jong II's Reigns of Terror

The brutal totalitarian regimes of Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong II are sourced by these leaders'feelings of personal unworthiness and low self-esteem. Both Iraq's and North Korea's arms proliferation strategies are attempts by these countries' weak rulers to exert dominance through force to conceal thoughts of personal inadequacy and an inability to lead without violent repression.

Saddams father died when his mother was pregnant with him. His mother tried in vain to commit suicide and abort the pregnancy. When he was born, his depressed mother wanted nothing to do with him and sent him away for 3 years to live with an uncle. At age 4, he returned to live with his mother and step-father who was psychologically and physically abusive. To this day, he cant accept any criticism whatsoever and kills all who threaten to oppose him. He utilizes brutal violence to avoid even the threat of being controlled by others.

Kim Jong II's younger brother drowned as a child and his mother died when he was seven years old. Shortly after, in 1950, the Korean War broke out and he was sent to Manchuria, returning three years later when it ended. To hide feelings of unworthiness and being not enough, Kim Jong II created a grand fairytale of miraculous happenings on the day of his birth. He wears lifts in his shoes, teases his hair and is addicted to drunken orgies with his pleasure squad" of teams of women to conceal his thoughts of worthlessness. Those close to him describe Jong as a strong-willed dictator who is short-tempered and ruthless when it comes to punishing anyone who questions his policies.

Both Hussein and Jong II demand blind allegiance and hero-worship of their followers.
