DON'T LET THE WAR STOP YOUR LIFE
Effective tips from leading Life-Coach Devlyn Steele to manage stress and anxiety during war and tension in the world.
LOS ANGELES, April 3, 2003 -- Even with war, it is important that people continue with their lives and get past their fear, according to life coach and creator of toolstolife.com, Devlyn Steele.
"Staying informed is important, but following 9/11 life stopped. We became fixated by and glued to the television -- the event became our lives," explains Steele. "People have no power over the events in this war, but they have power over how they go about their daily lives. Anxiety and fear are reduced by taking action."
Steele's Top Ten steps to take control and reduce fear and anxiety are:
1. Do not watch television 24/7--stay informed not obsessed.
2. To avoid restless, sleepless nights, do not watch the news right before going bed.
3. Start each day by planning and thinking about what you need to do for your life-the news can wait.
4. Make sure you are doing your normal activities--especially with your children.
5. Let this stimulate you to get in touch with family and friends.
6. Get out, go to the movies, go bowling, meet friends for dinner. Listen to music and read.
7. Get organized, clear out your closets, clean your house, do your taxes.
8. Exercise is a great way to relieve war-related anxieties. Go for a walk, go to the gym.
9. Simple things like buying flowers will make you feel better.
10. Volunteer and get active in your community. You always feel better helping others and this should remind us all that we want to build a better world. A great website to identify community help opportunities in your neighborhood is networkforgood.org.
Steele says: "We can all live our lives to the best of our ability every day. The war should not be an excuse for not paying attention to our lives. War can be a positive personal motivator -- this is the time for us to pick up the pace and realize how important our lives are.
"Be powerful and make your day the best you can -- that is what I tell my clients to do each day. I ask them to start their day with this one question, 'How can I make my life better today?' Ask yourself that, and take action."
