Alan Atkinson is a news producer and reporter with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation based in Adelaide, South Australia. In October 2002 he went with his wife and two teenage children to Bali for a holiday. They were keen to show their children something of the island's rich artistic and cultural heritage. Near the end of their time there, the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar were blown up and almost two hundred people - including 89 Australians and tourists from many other countries - were killed. The book traces the family's colourful and often entertaining holiday and then turns to chronicling the aftermath of the terrorist attack. The writer, one of the first Western reporters on the scene, describes the difficulty of reporting accurately and objectively in the face of the horror. It also reveals his love of the island and its culture.
