The Missing Part of Your Will: Your Testament. This book or ethical will is Dolislager's gift to her family. Through stories she illustrates what she's learned and come to value in her lifetime.

Believing that the wisdom acquired in a lifetime is as much a part of a familys legacy as are all of its material possessions, Phyllis Dolislager uses stories from her family's lives to illustrate what's truly important to her and her husband. Following the Judeo-Christian tradition of an Ethical Will or a Last Will and Testament, she put together this spiritual document, her Testament, for her family. Stories of trusting God, helping others, as well as struggles faced, make this book meaningful not only to her family but to all who read it.

And Other Stories of Faith, Family and Friends

FAIRFAX, VA-You dont have to be a millionaire to leave a legacy. Believing that the wisdom acquired in a lifetime is as much a part of a familys legacy as are all of its material possessions, Phyllis Dolislager uses stories from her familys lives to illustrate whats truly important to her and her husband. Following the Judeo-Christian tradition of an Ethical Will or a Last Will and Testament, she put together this spiritual document, her Testament, for her family. Stories of trusting God, helping others, as well as struggles faced, make this book meaningful not only to her family but to all who read it.

Dolislager says that reading letters and/or stories from parents and grandparents is an excellent way for a family to understand the roots of their faith. Telling of struggles and success helps us become credible resources for them. Indeed, she believes that recording her values is an important step in passing on her family heritage. She says, If we dont record our stories and pass on our values, they will disappear along with us, and our families will be the losers."

Scripture also confirms her philosophy: Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 4:9 NIV.

The first part of 2000, Dolislager and her husband updated their wills. Their lawyer, Marilyn Otto, suggested that as people of faith, they should write not only their will, but also their testament." Dolislager says, I dont think she had a book in mind, but we had experienced Gods direction in our lives over and over again. There was a lot to share. So as a part of my Last Will and Testament, this book became the testament part.

When we think of a will, we usually think of a legal document intended to divide up ones property and provide for ones heirs. However, this kind of will has long been in use. In the Last Will and Testament or Ethical Will, the writer tries to sum up what he/she has learned and/or valued in life and to express what they want most for their loved ones.

A persons testament may document their spiritual quest. Jack Segal, who wrote Scarlet Ribbons in 1949 and When Sunny Gets Blue in 1957 said, It was important for my kids and grandkids to understand that after almost 60 years as an agnostic, I had to acknowledge that my musical ability was a God-given gift....I wanted my family to remember why I now embrace God with all of my heart." (Time, Nov. 11, 2002)

Dolislagers plan had been to share these accounts with only their immediate families. I told our sons that they were receiving it now rather than at my death," she says. It was presented with this premise in mind, May you see the importance of seeking and knowing Gods will for your life. May you also see the profound influence made by the Word of God and other people of faith. Some of these stories arent easy to share, but my prayer echoes the song: Lord, I offer my life to You, everything Ive been through, use it for Your glory."

Almost immediately others wanted to read her testament. She ended up doing three printings. As Dolislager began giving her writing workshops, more interest was generated. Finally getting the book published became necessary. It is her hope that it might serve as an incentive/example to all who read it. May you, too, leave behind your own testament" for your loved ones."
