Americans Claiming Acres In Iraq Over the Internet at Iraqiacres.com
A new web site, iraqiacres.com allows visitors to claim an acre of land in Iraq. They receive a certificate documenting their claim to an acre in a region of their choice, and proceeds support war-related charirites.
LOS ANGELES, April 4 -- As American troops converge on Baghdad in the war against Saddam Husseins regime, ordinary Americans can stake out their own territory in Iraq on the world wide web via a new web site: www.iraqiacres.com.
Designed to let average Americans register and certify their claim on an acre of Iraqi land, iraqiacres.com provides a way for taxpayers to get in on the action as coalition troops seize territory halfway around the globe. When I heard the Bush Administration ask for $75 billion to finance the war in Iraq, the first thing that popped into my head was that for that kind of many, I think we all deserve a little piece of Iraq," said Harold McClure, founder of the iraqiacres.com web site. At $75 billion, that comes to $375 per American taxpayer, or we could pay each Iraqi solder $142,000."
Iraqiacres.com offers folks a way to stake their claim on that acre, and register it over the Internet, much in the same way you can name a star after someone, or buy property on the moon," McClure said. It also makes a great gift, and you can pick whether you want proceeds from your purchase to support the USO or UNICEF."
Visitors to iraqiacres.com can pick in which region of Iraq theyd like to claim their acre, from the Rumaila oil fields to Saddams hometown of Tikrit, and after a few clicks and a credit card payment of $9.95, they are sent a certificate documenting their claim, which includes their name, the date, a registration number, and the region of their choice.
A portion of the proceeds from each sale will benefit either the United Service Organizations, which supports American troops around the world, or the United Nations UNICEF, which provides aid to children worldwide, including in Iraq.
McClure said the new web site wasnt necessarily for or against the war in Iraq. It was instead created to draw attention to the staggering cost of the war, and to provide frustrated American taxpayers a way to feel like theyre getting something in return for their hard-earned dollars.
Some other quick facts about the cost of the war in Iraq include:
* cost per Iraqi citizen to liberate the country of Iraq: $3,000
* cost per acre of Iraqi land to conquer Iraq: $694
* average number of Iraqis per acre of Iraq: 0.23
* 2001 gross domestic product of Iraq: $59 billion
* Amount spent on war per Iraqi soldier: $142,857
* Cost of war to each US taxpayer: $375
As you can see," said McClure, after a billion here and a billion there, it starts to add up."
As for the debate about the war in Iraq, McClure pointed out that, reasonable people can disagree and still get along, and that's the way it is here at Iraqi Acres. Some of us support the war wholeheartedly, while others oppose war in favor of continued weapons inspections and diplomacy.
However everyone at Iraqi Acres agrees that the best way to stake your claim on an acre of Iraq is to register and document it at iraqiacres.com!"
