SCOOP THE POOP WEEK JUST IN
TIME FOR SENSE OF SMELL DAY
Between the chill of winter and the warmth of spring, comes the second annual National Scoop the Poop Week. Both Judy Shadwick of DogPiLe Patrol here in the Bay area of Florida and Matthew Osborn, creator of the International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services, reminds us now is the time to be aware of the necessity and benefits of making sure the "canine land mines" left behind by our furry friends is cleaned up, removed, and disposed of properly.
With so many dogs in so many back yards, failure to clean up is more than an inconvenience. It's a serious public health issue. Rains wash the poop into streams and groundwater supplies; public beaches in the Bay area have even been closed due to bacterial growth attributed to dog feces left in back yards. Flies are attracted to uncleaned yards, where they lay their eggs, increasing their population and the problems they cause. Judy Shadwick clients say, "The stuff is disgusting im glad I found her!
The newest motto by DoGPiLe Patrol a local pooper-scooper lately is WASTE IS A TERRIBLE THING TO MIND!" and it is! Who can enjoy their back yards with piles of dog poop? The kids can't play, the neighbors hate the smell, nobody can have backyard cookouts until it's cleaned up!
That's why dozens of dog-waste removal services across the USA have chosen the last week of April as National Scoop the Poop Week, reminding dog owners that now is the time to get yards, kennels and dog runs cleaned. Dog owners and others can find information gathered from the experience of people who make their livings by cleaning up after dogs at the Scoopers and Friends Discussion Board located on The Professional Pooper-Scoopers website: www.pooper-scoper.com, which also features The International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services, listing companies willing to do the chore for a fee across the country.
Springhill entre-manure puts the spotlight on scooping in Pasco County
April 27 through May 3 is National Scoop-the-Poop Week, and thats good news to Judy Shadwick. Shes glad to see the problem of dog waste disposal is getting some attention.
Judy is a professional pooper-scooper who operates DoGPiLe Patrol-- a Pasco county Springhill-based dog waste pick-up service.
"Having National Scoop the Poop Week is just one more way to remind people of the need for cleaning up animal waste, "says Judy. "Dog waste not only creates a mess in the yard, but is a health hazard, annoys the neighbors, and contributes to ground water pollution. It doesn't go away by itself.
"Cleaning it up is important for the happiness, health and well-being of the family, the community and the dogs."
JUDY STARTED DoGPiLe Patrol began her poop patrol back in 2002. She services residential backyards in Pasco Hernando and Pinellase and surrounding communities kennels and resenly expanded her services in to Hillsborgh county in early 2003. Eventually she hopes to expand to apartment complexes, parks, townhomes, and One of her slogans is, "Waste is a terrible thing to mind, were your #1 service for your #2 Problem."
Originally a homemaker first and a strugleling adverising artist second she started the business after rasing her two daugters and remairing in her late 30s. "I was tired of not having a purpose or any job security and decided to do something about it," she said. Her life long love for animals and research into animal-related businesses led her into the field
of "dog doo" and she says she has never looked back.
Now, she and one of her many assistant (her 5 dogs all who enjoy riding shot gun in the cab of her truck) visit clients backyards armed with fresh plastic bags. Wearing new latex gloves for every yard, they clean up what Rover has left behind, and then remove it from the yard and depositing it in the back of her Dodge Dakota truck. The days worth of collection is double baged and disposed of in to her dumpster can -- following the recommended disposal method.
SCOOPING IS nothing new for Judy who has lived in and around the pasco area for over 25 years before ore settling in west Pasco
"I grew up with dogs. The neigbors has horses and I was the luck one chosen to get to shovel all that poop as well as ride. When I had my own family and pets I found my self the offical pooper-sccoper, scooping up the front and back yard.after several atttemps to get the kids to do it or at least help with it"
Her company is soon to be a part of the nation-wide Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists. (aPaws), which sets guidelines and standards for professionalism for the pooper-scooper business.
More than a career, Judy also considers her job somewhat of a mission: "Most dog owners usually dont even think about the impact dog waste can have in regards to health issues."
Dog waste can host parasites and viruses, some of which can infect humans, especially children. The Centers for Disease Control recommends clean up of Pet waste at least once a week."
Taking precautionary safety measures and disposing of pet waste properly can prevent infections in both children and adults, not to mention the pets themselves."

Osborn creator of the International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services, adds, "By getting those yards cleaned up now, by doing it your self or if the yuck factor is their, by hiring a scooper. That way people will be ready to take in all the good arromas for National Sense of Smell Day!" That's Saturday April 26, sponsored by Sense of Smell Institute, www.senseofsmell.org.
