Former East German Political Prisoner Turned Martial Arts Expert Offers Free, Practical Tips For Self-defense For Ordinary Family Members of All Ages and Abilities

Vancouver, BC, April 15, 2003 - Forget about learning flying kicks a la Jackie Chan! And dont imagine that youre a dead duck when attacked because you are too small, too weak, too young or too clumsy to evade a rapist, robber or murderer. According to Vancouver-based martial arts teacher Ralph Haenel, a real-life attack does not include the referee, time-outs, rules and fairness that people become accustomed to when approaching martial arts as a sport. Haenel, author of the new book, For the First Time Understand Realistic Self-defense," offers free guidelines that enable people of any age, size or physical ability to prevent attacks and escape from harm when threatened.

Most importantly, you must keep your wits about you in a real-life self-defense situation," says Haenel, a Wing Tsun Kung Fu specialist who was investigated and imprisoned for a time by the dreaded Stasi secret police in his native East Germany. By knowing and practicing some simple yet effective strategies to get away from an attacker, youll know what to do and do it."

Haenels free downloadable guide to self-defense, Self-Defense Help If You Aren't Jackie Chan," available at http://www.yourconfidencecoach.com">www.yourconfidencecoach.com, includes scores of tips like these for men, women and children:

-   Before getting into your car in a parking lot, if someone is sitting alone in their car on the side nearest you, go back to the mall or your place of work and get a guard to walk you to the car. Its always better to be safe than sorry," notes Haenel.
-   After getting into your car, never sit there fiddling around with lists, packages, etc. (something many women and some men do). Instead, prevent an attack by driving off immediately.
-   Take elevators instead of the stairs, and always stand near the front ready to get off immediately if a suspicious person gets on.
-   If a predator threatens you with a gun, run! Highly trained cops hit a running target only 4 out of 10 times, and the criminal will miss 96% of the time.
-   Instruct a child to go to a certain pre-arranged, well-lit place if you are delayed picking him or her up.
-   When feeling threatened in a public place, yell Fire!" which best attracts attention and help.

Fractions of seconds can make a difference in the outcome when under attack. By waking up your senses and recapturing the natural responses that are in us all, you have an excellent chance of escaping harm," says Haenel, whose martial arts career spans almost 25 years.
