Entertainment Star Wins Award in National Writing Competition
Winners of Dance Spirit Magazine's Million Dollar Concert Contest include stage star and recording artist.
Rikki Lee Travolta has been named a winner in the Million Dollar Concert Contest sponsored by the national publication Dance Spirit Magazine.
The contest is in honor of National Dance Week, a weeklong celebration of the fine arts April 25 -- May 4 under the mission statement to heighten the awareness of Dance and its contribution to our culture."
President George W. Bush has issued a Letter of Commendation recognizing dance as a reflection of the richness and diversity of the human spirit and applauding those involved in planning the special events and activities of National Dance Week.
Sara Jarrett, features editor for Dance Spirit magazine, made the announcement of Travoltas award. Asked what type of dance program contestants would fund with a hypothetical million-dollar budget, Travoltas essay focused on using the monies to teach and develop the potential in those who just need someone to believe in them.
Reflecting a dedication to the community, Travolta also directs 50% of the proceeds from his recently published novel My Fractured Life" to the American Hero Foundation. Other charitable endorsements have included Broadway Cares, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Even Start Literacy Program, and Season of Concern.
Travolta is best known as a best selling recording artist and the touring star of West Side Story and Bye Bye Birdie. His film credits include work with Oscar winning director Ron Howard.
Travolta's representatives Drake Miezel at Prime Time Entertainment and Sam Samuelson at Stewart Talent/Elite Modeling are in talks to bring the performing back to the stage as a replacement on a current U.S. tour or on Broadway.
Official sponsors of National Dance Week include Gus Giordano Dance Center, Leos Dancewear, Spotlight Events, and Weissmans Theatrical.
Earlier this year Travolta was named an official spokesperson and professional delegate for National Dance Week. Previous celebrity ambassadors of the arts awareness campaign include Paula Abdul, Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, and Gus Giordano.
