World Renowned Scholars in San Francisco for Armenian Genocide Workshop

You are invited to participate in a Workshop on Armenian Genocide with Distinguished Scholars" on Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The St. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

San Francisco, CA April 11, 2003 -- AGBU Northern California and St. John Armenian Apostolic Church of San Francisco will co-sponsor Workshop on Armenian Genocide with Distinguished Scholars" on Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The St. John Karoon Dance Ensemble will also perform. This two-day program will take place at St. John Church located at 275 Olympia Way in San Francisco. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

The Bay Area is honored to host the following panel of respected scholars and authors:
Professor Stephan Astourian,
Professor Kevork Bardakjian
Professor Vahakn Dadrian
Dr. Rita Kuyumjian
Dr. Barbara Merguerian
Dr. Suzanne Moranian

Please join the AGBU and St. Johns Church to hear these scholars explore the topics of:
•   Issues of Denial, Evidence and Legal Dimension
•   Armenian Women
•   American Government and Missionaries
•   The Mental Impact of the Armenian Genocide

Following each topic, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panel. The workshop will not only discuss the history of the Genocide, but will also explore modern-day effects such as the issue of denial and the impact of the genocide that still affect and shape Armenians throughout the world.

At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Rita Kuyumjian will be available to sign her book, Archeology of Madness: Komitas, Portrait of an Armenian Icon. Dr. Kuyumjian is an assistant professor of Psychiatry at McGill University in Montreal and has written a very moving manuscript on the life of Komitas, an Armenian musical icon. The book explores Komitas life, music and his Post-traumatic Stress Disorder from surviving a death camp and the Genocide. Signed copies of Dr. Kuyumjians book will be available for sale.

The two-day program will continue on Sunday, April 27. Immediately following badarak at St. Johns Church, Dr. Kuyumjian will give a brief presentation and will be available to sign her book from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A requiem service will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Davidson Cross, located approximately 1.5 miles from the church. Everyone is invited and urged to proceed to the Mt. Davidson Cross after badarak and the book signing for the Genocide Memorial ceremonies.
