Pink Mango presents Sacred Walls: A Collection of Mithili Paintings from India."

The Collection is on view at Shivaani Gallery, 855 Folsom Street, Suite 108, San Francisco from April 26 to May 4, 2003. The opening of the exhibition is on April 26,2003 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

The exhibition showcases the works of Baua-Devi and other women artists from Jitwarpur, India. The show provides an educational context for the art by retelling the mythology and symbols that are the original inspiration for the paintings.

The 18 works on display are on handmade paper using traditional techniques of bhitti chitra (wall-painting) to create the surface for painting. For pigments the artists use mineral and plant dyes.

Mithili paintings combine select aspects of a 3000 year old traditional ritualistic art with inspirations and other personal innovations of the artists.
