Owner of Blackies, a Popular Washington Restaurant, Reveals Rags to Riches Life

Lulu Auger, the co-owner of the popular and historic Washington, DC restaurant Blackie's, publishes her memoirs, which chronicle her rise from poor Minnesota farm girl to renowned entrepreneur and hostess.

Little did Lulu Auger realize as a child when she made her own paper dolls out of cardboard that one day she and her husband Ulysses would be the owners of a Washington, D.C. landmark. Lulu chronicles her rags-to-riches life in the newly published My Life with Blackie the Greek: An Enduring Washington Love Story (Pacific Press, $21.95). The dreams of destiny that had pursued me in childhood and beyond have been fulfilled," says Lulu. But only in part, for I still feel there is more to come.

My Life with Blackie the Greek is the quintessential American Dream story. Using only her brain, ambition, and personality, Lulu Auger rose from a poor childhood as one of ten siblings on a small Minnesota farm during the Great Depression to become the owner of Blackies, a renowned Washington, D.C. restaurant, which has been featured in Washingtonian magazine, InTowner, and other publications. Along the way, Lulu made incredible friends, worked for the government during World War 2, became immersed in Greek culture after marrying Ulysses Auger, discovered the joys and pains of motherhood, and, above all, learned that having a strong backbone and being true to oneself are the keys to success. Her encouraging story of never giving up in the face of incredible odds will inspire everyone who reads My Life with Blackie the Greek.

Dr. Vernon Gross, Fox News Contributor, CNN Aviation and Risk Analysis, author, and Chairman, Omega Systems Group Inc., declares My Life with Blackie the Greek is a fast-reading story of two struggling children of immigrants who dreamed incredible dreams -- and lived to see them happen. Lulu Auger has sketched an incredible rags-to-riches saga that reads like a Horatio Alger fantasy. She weaves a tapestry of 20th century Americana filled with courage, tears, hilarity, suspense, and naivete. At its root, it is a love story. For both residents and visitors to Washington, D.C., Blackies House of Beef is now a famous and renowned landmark. But the reader of this memoir be astounded to learn how it all came to be. Expect to be inspired by this true account."

Lulu Auger and her husband Ulysses are the owners of Blackies, a restaurant in Washington, D.C. that InTowner says is destined to become a DC landmark." She first came to Washington, D.C. during World War Two at the age of 17 to work for the government, and after a few years in California, returned to Washington for good. Lulu Auger is an expert on food, the restaurant industry, and recent Washington history, and she is developing an active lecture schedule, speaking in front of such organizations as Women on Washington.
