You can spend a fortune on a fitness program or with a cheap $20 pedometer and a steplog it is a simple, inexpensive yet fun way to maintain or loose weight.

On average, humans need to take about 10,000 steps a day - about 6.5 miles - to maintain a healthy weight, according to medical experts.

Steptracker.com is a site devoted to tracking fitness with a pedometer. It offers free tools to help you track your steps and a community of members that help challenge and encourage each other.

To track your activity you will first need a pedometer. Pedometers can vary in price from $20-$50. You wear a pedometer clipped to your beltline just above either hip. With every step you take the pedometer will record the movement and advance the step counter. Clipping on a pedometer from the time you get out of bed until the end of the day is all it takes to start your fitness program.

After you have several days worth of data you can view your steplog statistics to see how your activity is doing over time. Tracking your steps this way will become an fun activity that will challenge you every day to step a little more.
