Christians for Israel Honors Bill Bennett with the Cornelius Cup Award
On Friday April 25, 2003 Christians for Israel USA awarded Bill Bennett the Cornelius Cup.
One of the highlights of the year for Christians for Israel (PRWEB) May 1, 2003
The idea for The Cornelius Cup" is based on the Biblical account recorded in Acts 10, of the Roman centurion, Cornelius. One might say that Cornelius was the first Christian Zionist. Cornelius was a gentile who, with his family, were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly." -- He was "a righteous and God-fearing man, who was respected by all the Jewish people." (10:2, 22). It is in this tradition that we make the presentation of the "The Cornelius Cup." The actual cup is an inscribed Jewish Kiddush cup, symbolic of the joy that begins the Sabbath and speaks of the fellowship and acceptance that Cornelius experienced by the Apostle Peter and the Jews.
The purpose then, of the presentation of the The Cornelius Cup," is to recognize a distinguished gentile Christian who has a record of care and concern for Israel and the Jewish people. This year, after much thought and prayer for a worthy recipient of The Cornelius Cup," we settled on one that we thought perfectly filled the bill -- Dr. William J. Bennett.
Dr. William J. Bennett is one of our nation's most informed, well-respected, and tenacious advocates of bold education reform. He served as Secretary of Education and Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities under President Ronald Reagan and Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President George H.W. Bush. Presently he is a co-director of Empower America. Dr. Bennett has written or edited 14 books. His current book, Why We Fight: Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism, has a chapter entitled, The Case of Israel, in which he forcefully argues, on moral grounds, for our continued support for the State of Israel.
Dr. Bennett is an outspoken Christian and supporter of Israel. That support has been demonstrated over the years in his writings and speeches as well as his television commentaries. Indeed, we are honored to have Dr. William J. Bennett to be the recipient of The Cornelius Cup" for 2003.
