SUPPORTERS OF ISRAEL REMEMBER ZIONIST, ORDE WINGATE AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETARY
Family and friends, both Christians and Jews gathered Sunday April 27, 2003 to remember Major General Orde Charles Wingate, a Christian Zionist and the spiritual father of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Among those at the memorial who spoke honoring Wingate for his great service, were Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon, Undersecretary of Defense Dov S. Zakheim, Major General John R. Alison USAF (ret.), and President of Christians for Israel, Dr. James M. Hutchens.
Orde Wingate was a shaping figure in modern military warfare and a committed Zionist. He died in March of 1944 while serving in the Burmese theater during WWII. The memorial service was in commemoration of his 100th birthday as well as a celebration of his support for Israel and the Jewish people. In the 1930's while stationed in British Mandate Palestine, Wingate helped organized the Special Night Squads to protect the Jewish settlements under attack from hostile Arab forces. These special forces were the precursor to today's IDF and helped save many lives during those troubling times. Wingate's dream was to, one-day lead the Israeli army in its fight for independence.
"At a time when many uncertainties face our world, it is important to recognize the value of unity and the sacrifices required to ensure global peace. Orde Wingate symbolizes that bond and commitment."
