US Dept of Commerce Grants Approval for Export of Strong SSL Encryption for PASSPORT Terminal Emulation Software
The US Dept of Commerce has granted approval for export of strong SSL encryption for PASSPORT terminal emulation software. PASSPORT PC and web based terminal emulators include: TN3270, TN5250, VT100/VT220.
HOUSTON, TX - The US Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security has granted approval for Zephyr Development Corporation to export and re-export it's PASSPORT terminal emulation software with greater than 64-bit encryption technology. This approval was granted after an extensive review of the Zephyr software along with the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption technology being used. Zephyr can now export and re-export PASSPORT terminal emulation software to most countries in the world. Some exceptions include countries such as Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan and Angola. The United States has a critical internal interest in ensuring that important and sensitive information of the public and private sector is protected. As a result of this, the US has a responsibility to maintain control over the export and re-export of technology.
Zephyr's PASSPORT terminal emulation software provides TN3270, TN5250 and VT100/VT220 host access to IBM zSeries (S/390), IBM iSeries (AS/400) and Unix host systems, as well as FTP file transfer. The PASSPORT PC-to-Host and PASSPORT Web-to-Host terminal emulation software provides SSL server authentication and encryption providing secure data access across TCP/IP networks. Terminal emulation sessions are protected from eavesdropping, tampering or message forgery over TCP/IP. SSL security is critical for those organizations that use terminal emulation for remote access across the Internet to access sensitive data on corporate or government mainframes.
Zephyr licenses the SSL cryptographic software from RSA Security, a recognized leader in Internet security. The RSA BSAFE SSL-C software development kit is used by Zephyr to provide SSL encryption security in both the PASSPORT PC-to-Host and PASSPORT Web-to-Host terminal emulation products. This development kit provides high-performance security based on more than a decade of extensive engineering and cutting-edge cryptographic advancements. More than 1,000 organizations use RSA Security software development kits.
