Over three years in the making, Torjan's film sheds light on one of the most mysterious literary figures of the 20th Century, a man who was genius, jokester, shaman and warrior all in one. It's possible that only devotees of Castaneda will fully enjoy this doc, but I, personally, knew nothing but rumors about the man, and I was fascinated. In the 1990s, after years of seclusion, Castaneda emerged and offered to teach a class in his philosophies (ideas that landed him onthe cover of Time magazine in the 1970s).

Torjan, a Castaneda student himself, talks frankly with his fellow students, and they share with the camera their experiences alongside this singular personality, imparting what they learned from him and what he learned about them. Castaneda's ideas are so intricate, so rooted in his concept of Non-Ordinary Reality, that they're hard to distill in a sentence here. But if you see yourself as a being on a path to alternative spiritual enlightenment, then this is the film for you.

By the way, the interviews are backed with dazzling animation and experimental film bits, so this is by far one of the most intense visual and intellectual experiences to be had at the 2003DIFF.
