Women of Washington Will Feature Local Restaurateur and Author at May Hope Is A Woman" Event
Women of Washington will be featuring Lulu Auger, the co-owner of the famous Washington, D.C. restaurant Blackies and author of 'My Life with Blackie the Greek,' at its May event - "Hope is a Woman." Lulu Auger is a renowned hostess and expert on local history and the restaurant business. Her restaurant, Blackies, has been in business for 57 years and is considered a D.C. landmark.
Hope is a Woman" honors women who have paved the way for others. Gail Berendzen, president of Women of Washington, tells Lulu, You certainly are one of those extraordinary women." Honorees come from a variety of backgrounds and share their life experiences and wisdom. Past honorees have included journalist Helen Thomas, actress Rhonda Fleming, and Civil Rights leader Dr. Dorothy Height. This years event will take place on May 28th at the Four Seasons in Washington.
Lulu Auger grew upon a small Minnesota farm with her nine siblings during the Great Depression. During World War II, Lulu moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a government secretary, and on the bus trip to her new hometown, she met her future husband, Ulysses Auger. Together, Lulu and Ulysses, built a local restaurant and real estate empire. Lulu chronicles her amazing life in the recently published 'My Life with Blackie the Greek: An Enduring Washington Love Story.'
