With the current military situation in the Middle East and the Sept. 11 Al Quaeda-linked terrorist events, understanding the world's different cultures, behaviors, and religions has become a vital international topic.
Dr. Laina Farhat-Holzman has studied world religions for 22 years, including the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the growth of radicalized Islam around the world, and she presents a history of world religions and their impact on current events in the second edition of her book, Strange Birds From Zoroaster's Nest: An Overview of Revealed Religions.
"There is enormous public interest in religion -- particularly in learning about religions that are playing an important role in contemporary world conflicts," Farhat-Holzman says. "The reading public wants to know what is driving what appears to be World War IV."
Strange Birds From Zoroaster's Nest studies the roots of religious practices and beliefs. It begins with the first known religion, Zoroastrian, which was named after the prophet Zoroaster who lived somewhere between 1200 and 1000 B.C. The book also provides insight into how modern-day countries are embracing the darkest aspects of traditional religion, resulting in religious and political conflict.
"This is a history of how religions emerged, how they influenced each other, and how they actually function," Farhat-Holzman says. "It approaches religions factually rather than reverently."
Farhat-Holzman formerly taught World History and Islamic Civilization at Golden Gate University in San Francisco and was Executive Director of the San Francisco United Nations Association, speaking frequently for the Commonwealth Club and World Affairs Council.
The second edition of Strange Birds From Zoroaster's Nest (ISBN 1586840312; retail price $24.95; pub date July 2003; available from Baker & Taylor) is published by Nonetheless Press.
