SEC Chair Donaldson to Headline NYFWA Annual Dinner

SEC Chair Donaldson will be the keynote speaker at the NYFWA Annual Dinner on June 5, 2003. Matt Winkler named Elliott V. Bell Award winner.

William H. Donaldson, Chairman of the Securities & Exchange Commission, will be the keynote speaker at the New York Financial Writers Associations Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

At the event, the Association will also present its prestigious Elliott V. Bell Award to Matt Winkler, Editor-in-Chief, Bloomberg News. Named for the renowned journalist and first president of the NYFWA, the Elliott V. Bell Award is awarded annually and recognizes a journalists long-term contribution to the profession of financial journalism. Paul Steiger, Managing Editor of the Wall Street Journal and last years Elliott V. Bell winner, is scheduled to introduce Donaldson. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the NYFWA 2001 keynote speaker, has been invited to introduce Winkler.

In addition, the Association will also present scholarships to New York metropolitan area college students with specialties in business or financial journalism, according to Richard Papiernik, this years Association president. Ten students from three different journalism schools and universities will receive awards of $2,400. The scholarship program was begun in the 1970s and is regularly funded by the Association from portions of proceeds of various Association events.

The keynote speaker, Chairman Donaldson, was appointed the 27th SEC Chair by President George W. Bush on February 18, 2003. Previously, while he resumed his position as Chairman and CEO of a private investment firm that he originally founded in 1981, he simultaneously served as Chairman of the Board of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. From 1990 to 1995, he was Chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. From 1975 to 1980, Mr. Donaldson was a founder of Yale University's Graduate School of Management, served as its first dean, and held a tenured chair as the William S. Beinecke Professor of Management.
