Nostalgia For 007 Comes To The Queen Mary
Two guys turning their years of growing up with 007 James Bond into the premiere spy related fan convention of 2003 aboard the Queen Mary featuring an appearance by James Bond.
Two guys that grew up with James Bond and other great film/TV spies are producing SpyFest 2003, the premiere spy related fan convention, aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA August 9-10, 2003
Cort McCadden, Atlanta, GA, has always been a frustrated James Bond. While returning from DragonCon, which is the largest sci-fi convention in North America, he came up with the idea of offering spy fans the same opportunity to meet their favorite stars from spy movies and TV. Not knowing if something like this already existed, he went up on the Net and began to ask around.
"That's where I found Matt Sherman, who was already producing the premiere Bond related fan convention in cities like San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans," says McCadden, a thirty year veteran in the public relations consulting world. "Matt told me he had thought about expanding beyond Bond since he was friends of other spy fan groups that love The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, I Spy, The Avengers, and Mission Impossible."
"Matt has pulled off the big coup getting James Bond himself, George Lazenby, who was in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Lazenby normally does not do events like these."
"Cort has developed a relationship with the Public Affairs Office of the CIA that is allowing us to have another big coup that will be the talk of SpyFest," says Sherman, who lives in Gainesville, Florida. "We are going to have on loan from the private collection of the CIA spy items that are not seen by the general public. These items will be accompanied by TV producer/author Keith Melton, who collected the items for The Agency. He is also bringing with him retired Major General Oleg Galugin of the KGB, who used these very items while directing the spying operations against the USA. They have only been out the CIA once before and that was to the Reagan Library."
SpyFest 2003 will also have numerous other stars from the world of film and TV that include Virginia Hey, Charles Napier, Susan Lloyd, Don Stroud, Phil Morris and Bruce Glover. Also screenwriter Roger Towne and producer Jeff Apple will do a workshop on their CIA related film The Recruit.
"It is a dream come true for me as 57 year old Baby Boomer who grew up with James Bond being my hero," reflects McCadden. And it helps to raise awareness of the charity we are working with - Comfort Zone Camp (http://www.comfortzonecamp.org)"
