Out in Jersey Magazine Celebrates Dual Milestones During New Jerseys 12th Annual GLBTI Pride Celebration
TRENTON-Local gay journalists Peter Frycki and Tobias Grace announced today that Sunday, June 1 marks the accomplishment of Out in Jersey Magazines two main goals for its first year of publication: a distribution of more than 6,000 copies per issue, and full-color capabilities.
The June/July 2003 issue of Out in Jersey, which can also be found at various business and pride organizations throughout the state, features the first use of full color by the magazine. This marks a milestone in Out in Jerseys transformation from its birth more than seven years ago as a Trenton-based gay civic association newsletter, to the statewide voice of New Jersey gay society, politics and culture that is today, Frycki said.
Out in Jersey now distributes more than 6,000 copies six times a year through its network of more than 80 distribution points throughout the state, added Grace, and both the distribution numbers and outlets grow with every issue. More than 70 advertisers to date have made Out in Jersey part of their media buying budget, representing businesses as international in scope as Bristol-Myers-Squibb and as local as The Gilded Lily Florist of Flemington, NJ. Professional services, restaurants, realtors, doctors, artists, antiques dealers, nightclubs, furniture retailers, vacation destinations, medical services providers, construction firms, magic supply shoppes, and more: all have found in Out in Jersey a home for showcasing their goods and services.
We have a vision," Grace said. Out in Jersey can clearly see a world in which queer kids can walk down the halls of their schools without fear-where same sex parents can raise their kids without harassment-where intersexed, transgendered, bisexual, gay and lesbian couples and individuals expect and get the same legal recognition and respect as their straight counterparts. Even more than that, we see a world where those same couples can walk down the street, arm-in-arm, hand-in-hand, and draw not a single second glance."
We see this world. We can almost reach out and touch it. Our readers and advertisers help us make it real," said Grace. We cannot succeed without them."
Our readers are finding 'Out in Jersey to be interesting, entertaining, informative, and meaningful to their lives," Grace said. We are reaching members of the gay community in New Jersey who care about themselves and about others, who are interested in more than just visual content, and that are looking to discover just what makes New Jersey such a great place to be gay."
I believe the growth of Out in Jersey is because of the gay support in the community, plus the desire for a more powerful media voice for gay people in this state," Frycki said. Out in Jersey is committed to news coverage of this entire community, committed to providing timely information of lasting value, and committed to providing businesses with a targeted audience to reach the gay community here in New Jersey."
The June/July 2003 Pride" issue of Out in Jersey will features articles on the next generation of gay activists in New Jersey, and on the mental and emotional health of LGBTI people as discussed by in-state mental health services providers.
Recent editions included ongoing coverage of the same-sex marriage initiative and domestic partnership legislation before New Jerseys judges and legislature; and articles on New Jerseys thriving leather community, visiting alt-rocker Ani DiFranco; controversial AIDS treatment regimens; the plight of gay families of victims of September 11th, 2001; and coverage of Capital Rainbowfest, the first-ever state-wide LGBTI celebration to be held in Trenton.
Contributing columnists exclusive to 'Out in Jersey include noted gay pagan philosopher Leon Calafiore, local film critic and AIDS journalist Mario Brescio, local radio personality Bill Stella on 'out music, tech columnist Theo Durst, long-time activist Gary Pfeffer on coming-out issues, the Rev. Athena A. Gassoumis on gay religious issues, Tomaso Magliaccio on gay spirituality, Alan-Joseph on fashion and fitness, and Robert Laczko on gay theory and history.
Regular features include an indispensable calendar of statewide LGBTI events, newsbriefs from around the state and around the world, original and syndicated editorial cartoons and comics, crosswords, horoscopes and advice columns both real and facetious.
Out in Jersey also carries a variety of well-known syndicated reporters and columnists, including Paula Martinacs Lesbian Notions," Hastings Wyman on national politics, Liz Highleymans Past Out" gay history series, and award-winning author Perry Brass on queer culture.
News duties are ably handled by Frycki and Grace, with assistance from former journalist Dennis C. McGrath and intern/writer Robert Howland. Art Director Michael Pettyjohn, Copy Editor Kassia Switlik Bukowsky and Layout Editor Alan-Joseph manage the look and feel of Out in Jersey, with photographic chores also falling to the talented Alan-Joseph. He and Howland share ad sales responsibilities. Rivendell Marketing supports 'Out in Jersey with ad sales on a national level, and can be reached at 908-232-2021.
Readers and advertisers alike agree: Out in Jersey has earned a place on their coffee tables, and in their advertising budgets, Frycki said.
The New Jersey gay community has been given little notice by the larger publications in Philadelphia and New York," Frycki commented. With each issue of Out in Jersey, the community continues to show its support of a quality publication that provides informative news coverage as well as local opinion pieces tailored specifically for the savvy gay reader."
The core of this enterprise is formed by a veteran team who are deeply committed to the community's long-term social and political goals," Frycki said. Our aim is to raise New Jerseys gay press to the next level by creating a magazine of record that thoroughly documents the events, cultural trends and personalities shaping--and being shaped by-New Jerseys large and dynamic lesbian and gay community."
Our ultimate goal is to create a product that is relevant and available to everyone in the LGBTI community," Grace added. We aim to be a united voice for a diverse community."
