"ABOVE & BEYOND: 100 Years of Women in Aviation" a Centennial of Flight film takes off!
Washington D.C.: The U.S. Air Force Centennial of Flight Office and The Womens Memorial Foundation hosted the World Premiere of ArtReach-Internationals ABOVE & BEYOND: 100 Years of Women In Aviation" at Arlington National Cemetery. The 1/2 hour documentary reveals extraordinary feats of aviation including Katharine Wright (sister of the famed Wright Brothers), WWII Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), and Eileen Collins, the first female Space Shuttle Commander.
Film Writer Julie Englund, Dean for Administration at Harvard Law School, is the daughter of WWII Woman Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) aviator Irene Englund. Irene towed targets for air-to-gunnery practice by male trainees using live ammunition. Julie learned that WASPs were ineligible for the same military honors at Arlington National Cemetery given men, and helped wage a successful campaign to right this inequity.
ABOVE & BEYOND" launches a series of Centennial of Flight activities that extend beyond our nations capitol. The film screens daily at The Womens Memorial Foundation and airs on NASA TV on Sat/Sun at 7pm. The film is traveling with a WASP Museum Display and a Commemorative Banner to Centennial of Flight events across the country.
