Responding to Suspected Financial Elder Abuse

Financial elder abuse is rapidly growing in California and the professionals who serve this aging population can gain more information and acquire more skills concerning detection and prevention by attending this upcoming daylong seminar on June 3, 8a.m. to 1 p.m. in San Rafael.

The conference will help participants gain the communications skills needed to assist elder victims of financial abuse and will inform them about identification and prevention of the latest frauds and scams. Those who work in organizations serving elders will learn how to develop internal reporting procedures if financial abuse is suspected with any of their clients.

Activities also include exploration of mandated reporting. a summary of elder abuse laws, and a panel discussion identifying who responds to reports of suspected abuse. These include Sue Powers Kane, Manager, Adult Protective Services; Marin County Deputy District Attorney Robert Nichols; Michelle McCabe, Marin County Public Guardian; and San Rafael Police Departments Detective Dan Fink.

Keynote speaker Candace Heisler serves on the board of directors for the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and is also Assistant Adjunct Professor of Law at Hasting College. She formerly was Assistant District Attorney for the city and County of San Francisco for 25 years and has been a trainer and consultant for federal, state, and other governmental agencies regarding financial elder abuse and domestic violence.

Legal Aid of Marin Executive Director Roy Chernus said, Marin Countys elders have bulls-eyes on their backs, placed there by people, including in some cases relatives or 'friends, seeking to take their assets. This seminar is designed for people in fields that serve our community elders, from lawyers and law enforcement officers to nurses, social workers and financial advisers to learn how to respond to this huge and growing problem."

Event coordinator is Legal Aid of Marin and collaborators for this event include Marin Countys Department of Health and Human Services, District Attorneys Office, Sheriffs Department, and the Bar Association.
