Simputer (USA) Accepting Used Computers Local non-profit refurbishes computers and gives back to community

Charlotte, NC: Simputer (USA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of area young people by supplying refurbished computers to those in need, as well as providing crucial job training. Unwanted machines donated by local businesses and individuals are repaired, refurbished, and upgraded and made available to schools, special need students and low-income families.

Donations can be dropped off at 651 Anderson Street on Tuesdays, 1-5 p.m. or Fridays, 10 a.m. -- 2 p.m.

In addition, to providing computers, Simputer (USA) also mentors students -- especially those at-risk -- for a career in computer repair. With the help of volunteer staff, students clean, test, and prepare the donated equipment for use, as well as provide basic operating instructions to approved applicants. Once the training is successfully completed these students receive formal certification in computer repair.

Since its formal designation as a 501(c)(3) in July 2002, Simputer (USA) has quickly expanded. Some important developments include:

·   Obtainment of a 3,000 square foot, climate-controlled warehouse located at 651 Anderson Street, Charlotte.

·   Partnership agreement with Tech Skills, Learning Center in providing certification training for students, as well as assistance with repairing and refurbishing of donated computers.

·   Donation of 100 computers and related equipment by Winthrop University.

·   Donation of cellular phones and office furniture by John Deere Corporation in Charlotte.

·   Designation as a recognized recycler with a number of agencies, including: NC Division of Pollution Prevention and Environment Assistance (DPPEA), NC Recycling Business Assistance Center, and the Solid Waste and Recycling Departments of Mecklenburg, Union and York Counties.

·   Volunteer support by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Centers and the RSVP Project.

·   Agreements with Urban League of Central Carolina, Inc., and the Monroe YWCA to provide computer equipment as well as technical training for program participants.
