AKM Introduces High Fidelity 4-Channel Audio Analog-to-Digital Converter for Pro, Consumer Markets
AKM Semiconductor's New 107dB A/D Converter for audio applications supports 4- and 8-channel TDM interfaces. This chip is targeted at consumer and professional audio designs.
San Jose, California (PRWEB) May 19, 2003 - Asahi Kasei Microsystems Semiconductor, Inc. (AKM), a leading supplier of audio ICs for professional and consumer markets today introduced the AK5384, a 24-bit, 96kHz, 4-channel A/D converter for high-end Audio/Video amplifiers, electronic musical instruments and car audio.
A unique feature of the AK5384 is its TDM (Time-Division Multiplexing) mode. Unlike standard I2S interfaces that send 2-channels of audio per interface, the TDM mode enables the transmission of 4-channels of digital audio over a single wire. Two AK5384 chips can be cascaded together using this mode, enabling up to eight channels of digital audio to be transmitted over a single wire. This feature simplifies board layout by reducing the number of traces between the A/D converter and the system processor. The AK5384 also supports standard I2S interfaces as well.
While input channels have typically exceded output channels in professional music markets, we are beginning to see this trend migrate to consumer applications," states Tony Rodrigues, Manager of Corporate Development at AKM Semiconductor. In both automotive and home applications, the demand for converting standard analog audio into the digital domain is increasing. The AK5384 addresses the need for multiple high-quality input channels in a single package."
The AK5384 uses AKMs proprietary enhanced dual bit techniques to achieve a dynamic range of 107dB and low distortion of 100dB. The four A/D converters provide sample rates up to 96 kHz in 16, 20 and 24-bit formats. The chip also supports both Master and Slave modes, accepting or supplying the clocks necessary to create an audio system. The parts 3-volt digital interface, together with an overflow flag for the A/D inputs, make the AK5384 a compatible and innovative solution for digital audio systems.
Price and Availability
The AK5384 is available in a 28-pin VSOP package and engineering samples are available now. The part is priced at $5.87 in 1K quantities. Evaluation boards and samples are available now directly from AKM.
