Fairfax, Virginia, May 8, 2003-Theater of the First Amendment (TFA), George Mason Universitys professional theater company in residence at the Center for the Arts, continues its mission of exploring new plays, rediscovered classics and family-friendly musicals in an exciting day of new play readings, First Light 2003, "Celebrating Heroes." The theme of heroes is explored during First Light with The Odyssey of Telemaca, a family show about a youthful, female hero in Mexico, the classic heroics of The Three Musketeers, and the all-American notion of the small town, and its reaction to a hero in their midst, in The Million Dollar Fight. Combining the talents of local playwrights, directors, dramaturgs and actors with audience feedback after each reading, First Light encourages attendees to be a part of the theatrical creative process.

2:00 The Odyssey of Telemaca by Mary Hall Surface and David Maddox
Inspired by Homers Odyssey, and scheduled for full production in the Concert Hall next season, this is the story of a heros daughter in pre-revolution Mexico who must herself become the hero in order to save her village and her family. Be among the first to hear the story and songs from this new family musical by the creators of Perseus Bayou, Sing Down the Moon and Mississippi Pinocchio.

Set in 1923, the play examines hero worship, as a small town in Montana gets more than it bargains for after recruiting Jack Dempsey for a world championship match.

The Center for the Arts complex is located on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University at the intersection of Braddock Road and Route 123. TheaterSpace is located on the ground floor of the Performing Arts building. Paid parking is located in the deck adjacent to the mainstage Center for the Arts Concert Hall and FREE parking is located in university lot K.
First Light is a production of the GREAT PERFORMANCES AT MASON series of performing arts events. Great Performances at Mason is a program of George Mason Universitys College of Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Visual and Performing Arts exists to create an academic environment in which the arts may be considered both as individual disciplines and as interdisciplinary forms that strengthen each other. Believing that an education in the arts is deepened by regular contact with the work of distinguished visiting artists, the College draws on a variety of professional presenting and producing units where artists from across the country and around the world regularly perform, give master classes, work with students during extended residencies, and interact with the community in a variety of other ways. These programs at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall, TheaterSpace, Galleries, Harris Theater, and other venues, provide a diverse selection of challenging and entertaining cultural experiences for the University community, as well as Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area. The College houses four academic departments: Art and Visual Technology, Dance, Music and Theater.
