IGEL CLEVER CLIENTS NOW SUPPORT MOZILLA FIREBIRD
Thin client manufacturer now includes the Mozilla Firebird browser in its Linux-based terminals
Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 23, 2003 -- IGEL Technology, the worlds leading manufacturer of Linux-based Clever ClientsTM, has announced support for the Firebird browser technology from Mozilla.org.
The new XUL-based browser component from Mozilla.org is codenamed Firebird" and is intended to be cross-platform. The project is typical of Mozilla.orgs modular approach to browser technology and highlights their open source ideals. It is likely that the Mozilla Firebird project will evolve into the mainstream Mozilla Browser releases as early as release candidate 1.5.
We decided to jump all over this technology at an early stage in the development cycle. Mozilla is strategic to our next-generation IGEL Linux Internet delivery device," says Steven Earle, President US Operations for IGEL Technology. We need an open source technology that supports all the best Java technology emerging from SUN and IBM. Currently we offer Internet delivery using Mozilla technology coupled with either SUN Java 2 or IBM JRE. To this we add 'plug-in technologies like Citrix nFuse, Macromedia Flash Player, Real Player, MPlayer, Word Reader, PDF Reader and others."
The customer gets an Internet delivery device that is based entirely on open standards and delivers the full promise of a wired-world, all in one managed, small footprint device. Support is also offered for SmartCard SecureAccess, Wi-Fi access, USB mass-storage devices and much more.
This technology is significant because it is based on open standards," says Earle. Mozilla.org works very hard to adhere to standards, including those proposed by the 'W3C World Wide Web Consortium. Everybody speaks about IE6, but IE6 could be viewed as a barrier to success because it is not open. The Internet and Internet delivery needs open standards. Every component in the Internet is based on open standards and open source -- except IE browsers. From SMTP and POP3 to DNS, HTML to XUL -- are all open standards. Shouldnt the browser technology also be open?"
If you look at successful software like the C programming language or the UNIX operating system you will notice that they have one thing in common -- adherence to standards. In the case of C and UNIX the most prolific standards involved are IEEE POSIX standards. This almost religious adherence to standards is instrumental in the success of both C and UNIX. I believe that browser technology and the Internet community as a whole can only benefit from adherence to open standards," concludes Earle.
The integration work on the Mozilla Firebird browser was completed by IGELs engineering team in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and they will continue to keep a close watch on the progress of the technology as released through Mozilla.org.
