Artists Gather for Special Event
Noted artists from a range of disciplines will gather at Philadelphias Solaris/Aikikai Arts Center on June 8, 2003 for a special salon and book signing. Admission is free to the public. Art will be sold to benefit the cultural center.
The Philadelphia Solaris/Aikikai Center will host several area artists for a performance salon and book signing on June 8, 2003, 3-7PM at 2100 Chestnut Street. Admission is free to the public. Books, tapes and refreshments will be sold to benefit the cultural center.
Ive been planning an event like this for some time," says Ed Shockley, playwright and event organizer. Its an opportunity for people to witness diverse arts and meet the artists."
Participating artists will include Sondheim award-winning playwright Ed Shockley, New York-based poet Marj Hahne, award-winning author Christopher Klim, humorous storyteller Vicky Town, and theatre artist Kali Lela Colton. Producer/filmmaker Jan Johnson will screen the short documentary film Between Heaven and Earth, which explores the technique and philosophy of Sugano Sensei - a Shihan of Japanese Aikido martial arts. A short martial arts demonstration will follow.

Playwright Ed Shockley is the author of more than 50 plays and the winner of the Stephen Sondheim award for Outstanding Contributions to American Musical Theatre. He set box office records for Bessie Smith: Empress of the Blues and for Bobos -- coauthored with James McBride. Marj Hahne is a New York-based poet and educator who teaches and performs her poetry around the country. Her poems have appeared in several art exhibits, journals, and anthologies, as well as been heard on television and radio. She has two poetry chapbooks, Finding What Hides and Remembrance: for September 11, 2001, and a poetry CD, notspeak.
Christopher Klim is the award-winning author of the highly acclaimed satiric novel, Jesus Lives in Trenton, and a book on writing craft, Write to Publish: Essentials for the Modern Fiction & Memoir Market. This author, editor, journalist, and writing coach is also the senior editor of Writers Notes Magazine and chief architect of www.WritersNotes.com. Storyteller Vicky Town blends humor, movement, and audience participation to create a delightful and zany cast of characters. School, library, and museum audiences, from ages 3-103, have witnessed folktales from around the world. Theatre artist Kali Lela Colton is a Senior Lecturer at University of the Arts. She has worked extensively as creator and collaborator on original works for theatres, art galleries, schools and community centers.
