AeroMed, Inc. of Amsterdam, NY introduced plans today to begin marketing aerosol treatment chambers to help combat SARS in healthcare facilities. AeroMed, a leading manufacture of HEPA air purification systems for infectious disease control, began work on the product in the fall of 2002. Originally designated for use for patients suspected of having tuberculosis, the product has additional application with the recent onset of SARS.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA, multiple hospitals have reported cases of SARS among health care workers who were present during aerosol-generating procedures performed on patients with SARS, suggesting that aerosol-generating procedures may increase the risk of SARS transmission. The CDC is recommending healthcare facilities to review their strategies to protect health care workers during these procedures. The recommendations apply to the performance of aerosol-generating procedures in patients with suspect or probable SARS.

The AeroMed ATC (Aerosol Treatment Chamber) is an isolation chamber that a patient sits in during the administration of procedures such as aerosolized medication treatment and diagnostic sputum induction. The chamber is under negative pressure relative to its surroundings and all air that exhausts from the chamber is passed through a HEPA filter.

According to company president, Bill Palmer, many health departments throughout the United States have already made inquiries into the product for their chest clinics. The product also has many applications in hospitals and nursing homes he added. Palmer says that other products manufactured by the company such as their portable and ducted HEPA filtration units may also help meet the recommendations made by the CDC to combat SARS in health care facilities.

AeroMed Aerosol Treatment Chamber
The AeroMed® ATC is an aerosol treatment chamber designed to protect healthcare staff during the administration of Pentamidine or during sputum induction procedures. The CDC states, “All cough-inducing procedures performed on patients who may have infectious TB should be performed using local exhaust ventilation devices (e.g., booths or special enclosures) …” The patient sits in the booth during the procedure. Air is drawn into the booth through a pre-filter on the top of the unit. The air is then drawn past the patient and through a HEPA filter that is located under the seat. The HEPA filter removes airborne particulate contaminants at a removal efficiency of 99.97% on particles 0.3 microns in size. This filtered air is exhausted from the back of the booth just above the floor. The process of exhausting filtered air from the treatment chamber creates a negative pressure in the chamber relative to the surrounding area. This difference in pressure prevents potentially contaminated air from leaving the booth and possibly infecting others.
