Set in the present-day town of Phoenix, AZ, Skylar Knight is a junior in high school who is making her way through the final week of school. The subject on everyones minds is Blair Neumans Juniors Only End of the Year Bash...and The Kissing Game. Skylar knows that her crush, Kedren Price, will be there but she has one little problem: nonexistent pucker power. Her best friend decides to help her fix her problem by getting her kissing lessons. In between studying for finals, and learning how to kiss, she starts overhearing mysterious conversations about Blair and Kedren. And Skylar begins to wonder if her classmates are friends....or foes.
I wrote Undercover Love because I wanted to give some of my high school memories a what-if twist. One of my favorite shows at the time was 21 Jump Street starring Johnny Depp. The premise was twenty-something cops infiltrating high schools to catch the bad guys. I thought, what if it was the other way around? What if it was an ordinary teenager, with a little 'training, catching the bad guys?" Downs says. So I played around with some ideas and a story was born."
I didnt kiss a guy until I was in college," Downs adds, but I remember hoping I wouldnt do anything to turn him off. I was very self-conscious of my Julia Roberts-like mouth and was worried I would pull his lips off. Maybe he might not want to kiss me because he was afraid Id devour him whole or something. I wanted to find a different way for Skylar to get her lessons, since she had no one to practice on. Its amazing what you can find at the library."

Undercover Love is ...pretty authentic, since that is how I would have felt had I been a peer of these kids. Its a premise that gives her characters an important obstacle and an interesting way of dealing with it. I found the subject matter and the minor details about music, fashion, and appearances, was very appropriate for the intended audience."
