UN Chronicle E-Alert: COMBATTING GLOBAL HEALTH THREATS
United Nations in a united world

The World Health Assembly, which each May convenes in Geneva, has just granted
the World Health Organization additional powers to respond to new health threats,
including on-the-spot investigations, enhanced communications and broader sources
of reporting. This is a major step in the ongoing revision of the International Health
Regulations, first published in 1969, which currently limit mandatory reporting to
only a few diseases. In this second UN Chronicle E-Alert devoted to diseases and
their threat to global health security, we focus on efforts to combat well known health
threats, including leishmaniasis, leprosy, measles and river blindness.

articles on SARS, ebola, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as our earlier http://www.prweb.com/releases/2002/11/prweb51350.php">E-Alert on
World AIDS Day. As in our previous E-Alerts, all articles are culled from current
and past issues of the UN Chronicle.
