The Haitian Painting Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Emanuel Merisier entitled "The Haitian Picasso - Spiritual art." Emmanuel Merisier has been living and producing outstanding works of art for the past twenty five years. His artwork often deals with voodoo or peasant life in Haiti. Merisier's struggle with his artistic invisibility and his self-imposed isolation are his added strength.
Merisier's artwork has often been compared to Picasso, Chagall Gauguin, Beckman and Thorton Dial. Merisier is an example of the evolution of Haitian art from primitivism to modernism. Inspired by other Haitian painters, he joined the Foyer des Arts
Plastiques and the Brochette Gallery in Port-au-Prince. At the age of 35, he migrated to the United States and studied art at the School of Visual Arts from 1977 to 1980. His works are deeply psychological and mysterious. They are about mysticism, voodoo or life in Haiti. A prominent cross is seen in most of his paintings. He uses a Modern Expressionist technique to tell the folk-stories of Haiti.
Haitian Painting is located at 89 Summit Ave, Summit NJ 07901. Call 908-352-5152 for more information or visit www.haitianpaintings.com.
