E-Enabled" Home Security Applications Ready for Targeted Deployment

Strong interest among certain consumer segments for specific applications is offset by the technical and financial hurdles in deploying such services

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) May 27, 2003 -- E-Enabled Home Security, a new study from Parks Associates, has found that growing safety concerns among U.S. consumers have piqued interest in emerging home security applications such as remote monitoring and management. This study, the latest in Parks Associates Primary Perspectives series, determined approximately one-half of U.S. consumers with Internet access at home would find these advanced home security services useful.

With two-way broadband connections common in many U.S. households, some very compelling home management applications can find true commercial value," said Kurt Scherf, vice president of research for Parks Associates. With home and personal safety concerns on the rise, traditional home security players -- as well as a host of new players in the services, hardware, and software sectors -- will find new footing in this market."

The report is based on data from Parks Associates landmark consumer study Broadband Access @ Home, which comprises the largest long-form study of U.S. Internet households conducted to date. The data -- from more than 10,500 respondents in households with Internet access -- pinpoints both the opportunities and challenges facing companies as they offer e-enabled home security applications.

The early market for emerging Internet-enhanced home security applications exists within a smaller niche of single-family households that already use broadband services," Scherf said. Any realistic model for rollout would require partnerships between and among a variety of players, including ISPs, traditional security monitoring companies, builders, developers, and hardware and software developers. Furthermore, high-scale housing developments would serve as the best initial target for these innovative and more expensive applications because the hardware and software subsidies could be recovered quickly via bundled services billing."
