World Music Central is an all-volunteer effort. It began as an initiative of music journalist and record producer, Ángel Romero. The purpose is to develop an educational and informative world music Web site that features the latest information together with resources for music fans, industry professionals and academics. The Web sites definition of World Music is: traditional and contemporary folk and roots music from all over the world.
The portal features current news; CD, book and film reviews; artist profiles & discographies; resources such as glossaries, descriptions of musical instruments, and listings of world music festivals, record labels, booking agents and media: radio, press, TV and online media.
In a next phase, the Resources section will be replaced by an interactive database that will be more user friendly. And there will also be streaming video and audio.
World Music Central is now hosted by ibiblio.org, a collaboration of the Center For The Public Domain and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
World Music Central is a non-profit venture and welcomes donations.
