Gutterflycomix.com: a web comics publisher seeking to put interactive long form electronic comics on the map on the web.
Humor is no longer king of online comics and Gutterflycomix.com is out to prove it! The brainchild of Texas based artists Thomas G. Clemmons and Gary S. Burch, Gutterflycomix.com plans to take the medium of online comics to a higher level with their flagship title Green: Wicked Wicked Ways, launched on Halloween of 2002. Though humor strips are hugely successful on the web Clemmons believes there is an untapped market out there for adventure comics as well, a market that Gutterflycomix.com intends to cater to.
Beginning life on the web as a small private chat room, Gutterflycomix.com has quickly grown into a multi-page, multi-functional web site. In the summer of 2000 the site made the leap from being almost exclusively an online portfolio to being the launching pad for web comics production. I was working as an inker for a small publisher when I attended the (now defunct) Uncommon Con in Dallas, Texas," explains Clemmons. Even at that time there was a lot of talk about web comics and their impact on the industry. I had just read Scott McClouds Reinventing Comics and the thought of fully interactive electronic comics that made use of the things the internet had to offer other than just hyper linking and the infinite canvas idea really intrigued me so after the convention I phoned Gary and asked if he was interested in a collaboration project."
The concept was simple. Make comics for the internet that made use of all the things the web offers: video, animation, HTML, email, etc. but still keep the comics within the definition of 'comics." Clemmons said. The problem is that a lot of fans and creators interpret the definition of comics in different ways." In an attempt to solve this problem and bring the concept to reality Gutterflycomix.com launched their first online comic Green: Wicked Wicked Ways in 2002.
The idea behind the comic is a What if"? What if the Nazis had gone into hiding after World War II all the while grooming future Nazi generations for the time they would try and finish what Hitler had started and what if this time they did?" Describes Clemmons. The four main characters of the comic are professional thieves who begin unknowingly working for this Nazi faction, but through the course of the story, put two and two together and uncover the Nazi plot." With the limitless possibilities the web offers for multimedia it was inevitable that music would become an important part of Gutterflycomix.com and the comics. Gary and I had wanted to collaborate on a project for years. With his knowledge and training in film music he has brought an extra level of professionalism and entertainment to the project that other online comics lack."
With cinematic emphasis in the comic along with complete comic and website integration, the creators of Gutterflycomix.com strive to be the first of a new kind of online comics experience. We know we probably wont be or arent the only ones out there doing something like this." Said Clemmons. We just want to be the best."
Gutterflycomix.com is updated daily, weekly and monthly. In addition to online comics the site offers art tutorials, free downloadable stickers, posters and art as well as a merchandise store. The first episode of Green: Wicked Wicked Ways can be viewed at www.gutterflycomix.com. Expect episode two to hit the site in the Fall of 2003.
