Light-bugs Come to Life
In Fort Collins, Colorado, Mel Ristau of Ristau Studio has started a brand new craft. Light-bugs (see http://www.light-bugs.com) are available in kits (starting at $17.50) including everything one needs to create these small bug-like figures. Described by Ristau as a contemporary folk craft," Light-bugs are so simple that almost anyone (including children, adults, and those with or without previous wire and beading experience) can make one in about an hour. While relaxing and fun for individuals, making Light-bugs is also a terrific group activity, perfect for camps, parties, classes or workshops.
Featured in the June/July, 2003 issue of Beadwork magazine, Light-bugs are a fun and constructive experience for head, heart and hands," says Ristau. Without having to master complex new skills, children aged 7-9 can assemble them with adult supervision and older kids can do so on their own. Each kit includes an easy-to-understand guide, tools, beads, wire, and trademark wooden Light-bug spines. Dustin Wedekind, Managing Editor of Beadwork comments, On a shelf covered with beadwork, they truly stand out and you can almost hear them chitter."
Says Keriann Gore of Bead Cache in Fort Collins, Colorado, Both beaders and non-beaders will appreciate this craft. Non-beaders get a great introduction to using beads and wire. Beginning beaders will enjoy a fun, new way to work with beads. Experienced beaders will take the idea and run with it using uniquely shaped and colored beads to make the Light-bugs their own."
Once completed, Light-bugs can be kept as decorations, traded with friends or given as gifts. Ristau points out, Having them nearby is a great reminder of life's simple pleasures."
