Museum Dramatically Reduces Spam Email, Maintains System and User Control with CanIt-PRO
Network administration staff saves time while users set own preferences for dealing with junk email.
CeBIT America, New York, NY (PRWEB) June 18, 2003 -- The Science Museum of Minnesota has evaluated and selected CanIt-PRO to resolve the problem of offensive spam email while allowing network administrators and users to maintain control of email. CanIt, an industry-leading anti-spam solution from Roaring Penguin Software, Inc., makers of the acclaimed MIMEdefang email inspection software, currently serves nearly 400 mailboxes at the museum.
Joel Miles, the museum's network software support specialist, chose CanIt-PRO specifically for the flexibility and control that it offered: We didn't want our mail being routed through third-party servers; we needed to control how our mail flows."
Miles adds that the museum's users have varied preferences and needs regarding what email they want to receive: We needed the users to be able to customize their own blackslists. They like that they can easily dispose of messages without having to deal with them. And they don't have to come to us all the time to modify the blacklists for them."
Miles reports that CanIt catches between 22% and 25% of all ithe museum's incoming email as spam. The museum has deployed the professional version of CanIT, CanIt-PRO, which enables the network administration staff to decentralize spam management so that individual departments or users can tailor spam policies to their specific needs. This level of control is particularly important to large organizations and campus environments, where individual preferences, needs and departmental policies can vary.
CanIt supports the museum's dual-server mail routing environment. The museum runs CanIt on a Sunfire v100 with Solaris 9. Miles says, We needed something that we could customize and make changes to quickly. CanIt-PRO fit seamlessly into our network infrastructure and authentication system and has drastically cut down on the amount of unmarked spam making it into our mailboxes."
CanIt is available in standard and professional versions. CanIt-PRO is ideal for very large enterprises or campus environments, where control and management of the system needs to be distributed to individual departments or users. A detailed case study of the City of Yellowknife's CanIt implementation is available at www.canit.ca/customer_testimonials.php.
