COLUMBUS XTREME IMPRESSIVE IN DEBUT
The Columbus Xtreme kicked off their inaugural season Saturday with a 40-0 home victory over the North Lawndale Titans from Chicago.
The Columbus Xtreme kicked off their inaugural season Saturday with a 40-0 home victory over the North Lawndale Titans from Chicago. The weather was warm and the Xtreme were hot from the start as Eric Samuels returned the opening kickoff across midfield.
After settling for a 20 yard Larry Brett field goal on their initial possession the offense caught fire, scoring touchdowns on three of their next 4 opportunities. Five first half possessions netted three touchdowns and two field goals for a 27-0 halftime advantage.
The Xtreme defense was dominant in shutting out the Titan offensive attack. Displaying both speed and depth, they continuously handed the ball back to the offense in excellent field position. The punt rush was equally impressive forcing several poor kicks and scrambles by the Titans punter.
Wide receiver Jason Pugh exploded for three touchdowns on six catches to spark the offense. Also finding the endzone were wide receiver Gino Gay and fullback Jerome Kelley. The Xtremes two-headed monster at quarterback of Timm Miller and Eric Grant proved difficult to contain as each threw for two scores. Tailback Rayshaun Gales lead the rushing attack with 71 yards on 11 carries and kicker Larry Brett connected on field goals of 20 and 44 yards.
The Xtreme tries to remain perfect next Saturday, June 28th as they play host to the Louisville Bulls of the Mid-Continental Football League. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm and tickets are still available.
