Oprah Wants You To Read One Little Classic-
Try 27 in 6 Months and Living to Tell About It
Oprah has just announced the 1 classic everyone should read this summer- try reading 27 in 6 months. A hilarious new book shows what happens when you try...
Glen Ellyn IL
When Oprah announced last week she wanted her fans to read a classic, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, the question became; Who would read it?" One person who wont (at least not yet) is author Wayne Turmel. Hes just plain tired. Try reading 27 of the classics in just 6 months and living to tell about it.
Thats what happens in Turmels new book, A Philistines Journal-An Average Guy Tackles the Classics" (Published May 1,2003 by New Leaf Books). Its the hilarious story of how he decided to read all the books he should have read in college and hadnt. Keeping a journal of his thoughts, its also a story of modern thinking vs. the Dead White Males, post-911 America through the eyes of a transplanted Canadian, and the questions you couldnt ask in English 201.
Wayne Turmel is a corporate drone by day living in Glen Ellyn, IL. He spent 15 years as a standup comic before becoming an allegedly mature adult, so it should come as no surprise that A Philistines Journal" is as much a humorous look at turning 40 as it is a serious attempt to read the Great Books.
There are plenty of both here, though. Whether tackling the philosopher Epictetus (all that hoopla only to find out its 'Chicken Soup for the Latin Soul") or Robinson Crusoe (Its a little like a Rob Schneider movie- I liked it a lot but probably wont recommend it to my friends") he also asks some hard questions- like what does it mean to be a good father, husband and well-read person in todays world.
Novelist Jack Whyte, author of The Camulod Chronicles" series says, A Philistines Journal, is a jewel for anyone who has ever felt intimidated and disadvantaged by his or her failure to read Great Literature and Classical Philosophy. The Journal, an Average Guys run at the Classics, is a pleasure to read and its message is simple. It says, So what? Get over it and just look at it from this point of view..." and then it goes on to bring the unreachable into your grasp."
