PRESS RELEASE
Trumpet Newspaper Officially Widest Distributed Black Publication in UK
The Trumpet newspaper is the highest circulating black publication in the UK according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC).
According to the ABCs most recent audit The Trumpets average net distribution for the period July -- December 2002 is 26,031 copies. The newspaper is one of the few ethnic publications to be recognised by the body and has continued to grow despite the unfavourable economic climate of the media industry in general. Figures show that The Trumpet produces almost 8,000 copies more than its closest competitor -- Black Beauty and Hair who come in second with 18,279 copies.
Martyn Gates, ABC's Director of Newspapers and Consumer Magazines said: I'm quite sure that the benefit that The Trumpet will derive from having ABC certified distribution underlines the advantage that ABC membership offers, not only to the big consumer magazines and national newspapers, but also to good, well regarded publications serving minority communities or niche sectors.
Publications that seek to provide their advertisers with transparent information through the ABC certificate and embrace industry standards are to be applauded," he concluded.
'Femi Okutubo, Founder and Publisher of the newspaper said: We are grateful to God for this achievement. We have been working on attaining this level for at least five years -- and are happy that we have finally made it.
Some of our competitors, particularly those who have been in existence for a longer period of time or are bigger in terms of resources, are living in their past glories. That is why we have joined ABC so that we can have an impartial umpire determine true circulation figures. If they are sure of what they claim to circulate, let them submit themselves to an ABC audit. The hype is over and the facts are clear for all to see."
Pranay Bhimjiani, an advertising executive at media powerhouse PHD, who chose The Trumpet as part of an advertising campaign for supermarket giant Sainsburys said: During my interaction with the title, over the past 4 years, I can certainly say that this is one of the few ethnic titles that has positively evolved over the years and sports a very professional attitude. Trumpet has worked hard towards managing the expectations of its readers and has consistently improved its editorial content. It is definitely a top choice for any plan aiming to target the African community.
Congratulations to The Trumpet on achieving the largest ABC audit amongst the entire portfolio of Britain's black press."

NOTES TO THE EDITOR
1. The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) is the official body regulating the circulation and distribution of publications.
2. This is The Trumpets first audit since it had its application for membership of ABC approved in December 2001.
3. The Trumpet is a free monthly newspaper.
4. It is primarily aimed at the UKs growing African community.
5. There are not many black publications on the membership of ABC. The Voice (once the biggest black newspaper in the UK) used to be a member of ABC but 'withdrew temporarily about three years ago because of a slump in its circulation figures. New Nation, Caribbean Times and African Times, which are part of the Ethnic Media Group (EMG), have only recently joined the ABC and do not have a certified circulation yet.
