Summer NYSP Sports Program for City Youths Kicks Off Its 8th Year

Yale Universitys annual summer sports camp for young people, a component of the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), enters its eighth year.

New Haven, Conn. -- Yale Universitys free award-winning, annual summer sports camp for 350 city young people, a component of the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), enters its eighth year offering sports participation, socialization and educational activities to the citys youth.

The program also teaches its students the value of an active lifestyle. The NYSP utilizes Yales facilities and resources to conduct the program. The program, aimed at children ages 10-16 and held on campus, has received the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence in recognition of exceptional NYSP project performance as well as the Meritorious Award on two different occasions.

The National Youth Sports Corporation (NYSC) has been administering the program since 1968. NYSP fosters the belief that all children deserve opportunities for friendships and fun during the summer. It provides children of low-income families with positive memories and useful skills. Ninety percent of participants at each site meet U.S. poverty guidelines. College and university personnel work to identify economically disadvantaged children who could most benefit from the safe haven and educational activities of NYSP.

This years program will operate from June 23rd to July 25th. Media may attend a session, interview participants and staff with prior permission by contacting Thomas R. Violante at 203-432-1319.

For more information about NYSP, please contact Queen Edwards at 203-432-7413.
