Portland Center for the Advancement of Culture Celebrates the Success of Modern Zoo Opening Event Adding New Exhibits, Programming in July 2003

With over 100,000 square feet of gallery space provided by Cathedral Park Place, this massive exhibition houses the work of more than 75 regional artists in all disciplines that will culminate in a final opening event on August 16th.

Portland, Ore. (PRWEB) June 27, 2003 -- Following the success of its well-attended opening event, the Portland Center for the Advancement of Culture (PCAC) will add more than 15 new art exhibits and programs to its already active gallery space called the Modern Zoo (6635 N Baltimore) in a second opening on July 12th from 6 -- 11 p.m. PCAC will also host an Experimental Jazz Festival on July 19 & 20th to complement the popular Cathedral Park Jazz Festival; and show the work of regional filmmakers on Friday nights in July as part of its Northwest Film Fest series.

Second Opening Featuring Peninsula Artists Show

PCAC will introduce a group show called Peninsula Artists showcasing the work of artists living on the St. Johns peninsula to coincide with the St. Johns Window Project walking art exhibition opening on July 12th. The Modern Zoo gallery is one of many stops on the walking tour arranged by two local arts groups, Art on the Peninsula and St. Johns in the 21st Century, intended to attract awareness of St. Johns business community and create exposure for peninsula artists.

New artists at the Modern Zoo in July include 2003 Oregon Biennial artist Chas Bowie debuting a new body of photographs called Sunjects"; a mixed media and video installation entitled The Snug" by Emily Henderson and Molly Roth; Dark Mass" by Jacinda Russell; works by Chandra Bocci; Brian S. Eats Cock" by Zefrey Throwell of Alphabet Dress; two new paintings by Alicia McDaid; and a two-night dance performance, Les Petits Rats", by Margery Fairchild; among others.

Experimental Jazz Festival and Northwest Film Fest

PCAC will host an Experimental Jazz Festival at the Modern Zoo on July 19 & 20th from 8 p.m. -- 1 a.m. to supplement the distinguished Cathedral Park Jazz Festival by bringing local experimental jazz musicians to the St. Johns peninsula.

Saturdays lineup includes the 411 Quartet (Leif Erik Sundstrom-Percussion, Kelvin Pittman-Sax, Mark Kaylor-Drums, Steve Schneider-Sax) opening for the Rob Blakeslee Trio (Rob Blakeslee, Billy Mintz, Michael Bisio). Sundays lineup includes the John Gross/Jonas Tauber Duo opening for The Michael Vlatkovich Octet (Michael Vlatkovich-Trombone/Compositions, Rob Blakeslee-Trumpet, Michael Powers-Bass Trombone, Rich Halley-Tenor Sax, Chad Hensel-Clarinets, Tom McNalley-Guitar, Jonas Tauber-Bass, Ken Ollis-Drums), with Tim DuRoche and Lisa Radon performing spoken word and sound in between sets.

PCACs Northwest Film Fest kicks off on Friday, July 11th, at 9 p.m. with Jerk Beast", a film about three unsuspecting heroes who rise to the peak of rock and roll directed by Brady Hall and Calvin Reeder and produced by Brian Wendorf. Regional filmmakers will show their work every Friday at 9 p.m. through the end of the month.

Modern Zoo

With over 100,000 square feet of gallery space provided by Cathedral Park Place, this massive exhibition houses the work of more than 75 regional artists in all disciplines that will culminate in a final opening event on August 16th. A beer garden and food is available at all openings and special events, as well as a burrito stand run by former restaurant owner and St. Johns local Steve Farmer. What:   An inaugural art show curated by the Portland Center for the Advancement of Culture featuring the paintings of eight local abstract artists and a rotating display of more than 75 multidisciplinary art pieces.

About the Portland Center for the Advancement of Culture:

PCAC was established in September 2002 as a nonprofit art organization dedicated to supporting local artists and sustaining the cultural economy. PCAC aims to provide regional artists with a permanent neutral space in which they can showcase their work. It will also provide artists with a much-needed resource center to help educate and facilitate the research and creation of art across all disciplines. PCAC founders Bryan Suereth and Gavin Shettler are both established art curators.
