BEHIND THE SCENES AT BURKE'S PEERAGE & GENTRY: PREPARATIONS FOR THE 107TH EDITION OF BURKES PEERAGE, BARONETAGE & KNIGHTAGE

News of the new 107th edition of Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage, due in October 2003. The box set of three large volumes is enhanced with the addition of Knights, Scottish and Irish Chiefs and Scottish Feudal Barons.

For more than a year now, editors at Burke's Peerage & Gentry have been researching and updating genealogies for the next edition of Burkes Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage. The 107th edition, due to be published in October 2003 includes several thousand additional family articles, new to this publication. While adhering to the established format, the box set of three large volumes will also feature Knights, Scottish and Irish Chiefs and Scottish Feudal Barons.

Compiling a publication of this magnitude takes great planning and expertise. It is reassuring then that many of the editorial team, led by Charles Mosley, worked on the acclaimed 106th edition among other genealogical titles and have a wealth of experience and knowledge. The team of twelve editors plus administrative staff still have some research work to complete before the accumulated data is sent for typesetting and printing.

Research is meticulous and in depth with information gathered from a host of sources such as the British Library, The House of Lords, Buckingham Palace, the Lyon Court in Edinburgh, the Chief Heralds Office in Dublin and the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor.

Over 20,000 draft articles have been mailed to entrants so far. Packages have gone to every corner of the British Isles and around the world, in particular to the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Although a costly and time consuming exercise, Burkes believe that it is important to give entrants an opportunity to check the detail of their article before the book goes to press. Editors examine feedback from entrants very closely before making amendments where appropriate. Individuals and libraries have come to expect accurate and trustworthy information from Burkes and this work goes along way to assuring high quality.

In addition to genealogical articles of individuals and families, the publication will include comprehensive guides for readers. Charles Mosley has designed the preliminary pages to help readers get the most out of the publication whether they are professional historians and genealogists, enthusiasts or just plain curious. Several eminent authors have contributed essays on a range of topics and for the first time in many years a colour section is planned.

The entire publication will be available in print and as part of Burke's Peerage & Gentrys online database from October 2003.
